The long haul of work. The monotonous and painstakingly dull task of repetition. Working several days in a row. Odd hours, not being able to do anything with anyone else outside of work. Having your emotional energy exhausted. You're passions numbed and replaced with emptiness. The long haul. Seven days in arrow, for that one day you look forward to having off. That one day of freedom. Then you return and you dread it. Until you have off again. You work long hours and the job is repetitive often involving physical tasks. And after everything is all said and done…
Archive research is dream work for many historians. It is time alone with old documents, sometimes obscure, rare, and odd. It allows historians to have the opportunity to discover a story often not written about in history. A story that can be forgotten, or have parts missing in it.
Archive research however is not easy. The most important thing to remember when doing it is to be patient. It is a lot of paper. Sometimes a lot of it is literally useless and garbage. You have to do some digging before you find some that is very interesting. It also…
“We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Islam. We weren’t punctilious about locating and punishing only George W Bush and his top officers. They carpet-bombed Islamic cities; we killed civilians. That’s war. And this is war.”
-Osama Bin Laden
“As soon as Mohammed sits on his throne he’s gonna rule the world with a rod of iron. That means he’s gonna make the USA do what he wants them to. That means you’re not gonna have to ask if you can pray in public school. …
By the Left, I do not mean the Democratic Party. The Democrats are a right wing Capitalist warmongering party. By the Left I mean Socialists, Communists, and Anarchists.
In the 1960s-70s, College Campuses where seen as the hub of Revolutionary activity and radical politics. The Anti War Movement led the way, with Students for A Democratic Society blossoming an entire Generation of new Radicals, who would change the course of history.
Today, college Campuses seem to be the opposite, especially at UW Oshkosh.
Gay Liberation,Womens Liberation, Black Power, Anti-War, and the Enviroment Movement were all huge in the 1960s. …
Marxism, Karl Marx, Communism, Socialism. These four words strike controversy today, as they have since their creation.
Marx and Engels first histories included Engels German Peasant War and The Conditions of the Working Class in England in 1844. Marx’s first historical works where Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon and The Communist Manifesto. Marx and Engels way of looking at history was drastically different than historians before. They looked at the history from below. The History of the Working Class. Through the philosophical tool known as Dialectical Materialism and Historical Materialism, Marx and Engels where able to see how modes of…
The Problem of History, starts when History was first founded as a academic venture. The problem was the Rankian theory of History. That History was a objective science. That if one way of telling history was done, so much it had been tested, and that had been all there ever would be. That was the only story of History to be told.
This basis led to what can only be referred to as White Mans History. This white mans history often was written during the expansion of Empires. This led as the backdrop for what can only be thought as…
While going through the UW Madison Archives, I came across a this person named Carmi Weingrod.
“This collection includes a variety of published and unpublished booklets, pamphlets, flyers, newspapers, newspaper clippings, magazines, articles, essays, book chapters, etc. The majority of the materials relate to feminism, women’s liberation, Vietnam War, gay and lesbian issues, African-American women, and the Black Panther Party. There are a few documents directly related to events at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the late 1960's, especially the Vietnam War protests. Materials are both from national and local sources.”
Immediately when I read this I needed…
One of the most interesting parts of Early Modern History is Mary Wollstonecraft, the First Feminist Historian.
She disagreed that history was the story of progress, but more of a story of mans oppression over women. She was self educated and even started a school for women.
She saw the only the future as a period of possible progress, in which woman could be emancipated from patriarchy.
To me this way of looking at history is important, because it shows the oppression of woman, and gives a look at how imprisoned woman really were to men. Not being allowed education, being property of the man, and seen as a tool for social reproduction.
The liberation of woman is not only important to me, but a necessity.
When All Woman are Free, than everyone will be free.
The phrase historia comes from the ancient Greek phrase “learning through inquiry”.
History is often referred to as the never ending conquest to understand the past.
For myself, History is a story of the past we study in order to understand how we got here and in a way to understand the trajectory of the future.
Historians are not fortune tellers, or speculative, but we have a good general idea of what could happen and why it could happen, thru looking at examples of the past.
History for me is not silent. History is like a lion, it roars.
